Hacia 1920, con 15 años, Areces se fue a La Habana (Cuba) y trabajó en la famosa cadena de tiendas Almacenes El Encanto, donde aprendió los fundamentos del negocio de los grandes almacenes. En 1940, convirtió la sastrería en la actual corporación El Corte Inglés, S.A. A la muerte de Areces en 1989, su sobrino Isidoro Álvarez se convirtió en su sucesor. En 1995, El Corte Inglés compró a su único competidor serio, Galerías Preciados, que había entrado en quiebra[9].
