Esas palabras fueron las últimas de George Floyd. En un vídeo grabado por un espectador, se le oye decirlas, suplicando por su vida, 10 veces. Quizá más. Mientras un agente de policía se arrodillaba sobre su cuello durante 8 minutos y 46 segundos. Mientras otros tres agentes se quedaban mirando.
Como muchos de ustedes, he visto el vídeo de su muerte con una combinación de horror, asco y rabia. Y en las noches siguientes, he visto cómo esa ira se extendía por las calles de Minneapolis y de muchas otras ciudades estadounidenses con consecuencias devastadoras. He debatido si debía hablar. Pero después de algunas conversaciones emotivas con mi familia a principios de esta semana, me di cuenta de que tenía que hacerlo.
Aunque soy director financiero de un banco mundial, los asesinatos de George Floyd en Minnesota, Ahmaud Arbery en Georgia y Breonna Taylor en Kentucky son un recordatorio de los peligros a los que se enfrentan los estadounidenses negros como yo en su vida cotidiana. A pesar del progreso que ha hecho Estados Unidos, a los estadounidenses negros se les niegan con demasiada frecuencia los privilegios básicos que otros dan por sentados. No me refiero a los privilegios de la riqueza, la educación o las oportunidades de trabajo. Me refiero a los derechos humanos y civiles fundamentales y a la dignidad y el respeto que conllevan. Hablo de algo tan mundano como salir a correr.
