In its simple form, que, que, can never be preceded by a preposition. In order to be combined with a preposition, it must necessarily be preceded by a specific article: el que, la que, los que, las que.

The article preceding the relative clause that allows us to discern which of the entities named in the main sentence the relative clause refers to. The following three sentences are correct but the use of a relative in each case alters their meaning.

The relative who always has a person as antecedent and is usually reserved for written language.
