El Rey del Fútbol Europeo de El País (alternativa: Jugador Europeo del Año de El País) era un premio anual de fútbol otorgado por el periódico uruguayo El País al mejor jugador de fútbol de Europa. Lo decidían varios expertos deportivos, críticos y periodistas europeos basándose en las votaciones. Podía optar cualquier jugador de un equipo europeo, independientemente de su país de origen. Se concedió por primera vez en 1991, siendo el francés Jean-Pierre Papin el ganador inaugural. El último ganador fue el argentino Lionel Messi en 2012. Lionel Messi y el francés Zinedine Zidane son los ganadores récord del premio, con cuatro victorias cada uno[1]. Messi también tiene el récord de victorias consecutivas (cuatro seguidas, 2009-12)[2][3].
