Objetivo: Analizar la relación entre las características de los gestores hospitalarios y el uso del cuadro de mando integral y del presupuesto. Además, se pretendía analizar cómo influyen estas dos técnicas en los objetivos estratégicos de reducción de costes y de flexibilización del servicio. Métodos: Los datos se recogieron mediante un cuestionario enviado a 884 miembros de equipos de alta dirección de 218 hospitales públicos de España. La tasa de respuesta fue del 53,51%, con 473 cuestionarios útiles. Se utilizaron técnicas de ecuaciones estructurales para validar las escalas métricas y el modelo utilizado. Resultados: Los directivos más jóvenes y con menos antigüedad eran más propensos a utilizar el cuadro de mando integral que el presupuesto. La diversidad en el equipo de alta dirección estaba relacionada con el uso de distintas técnicas de control de gestión. El uso del cuadro de mando integral se asoció positivamente con la aplicación de estrategias sanitarias centradas en la mejora de la flexibilidad de los servicios y la reducción de los costes sanitarios. Conclusiones: La adopción de sistemas de control de la gestión no sólo depende del resultado de un proceso racional de toma de decisiones y de las presiones institucionales, sino que también depende de forma crucial de las características de los individuos responsables en última instancia de dichas decisiones. El uso del cuadro de mando integral facilita a los hospitales la ejecución de planes con múltiples objetivos estratégicos.
