Mantenga siempre el vehículo en buen estado. Para garantizar un buen funcionamiento y evitar situaciones no deseadas, es aconsejable realizar el mantenimiento periódico recomendado por el fabricante. Recuerde llevar la documentación original del vehículo (permiso de circulación y la Tarjeta de Inspección Técnica).
Las estaciones de ITV no sancionan por presentar el vehículo fuera de plazo y el centro realizará la inspección. Sin embargo, si el vehículo es detectado circulando por las carreteras con la ITV caducada, el propietario puede ser sancionado por los agentes de la autoridad encargados de la vigilancia del tráfico.
La frecuencia de la inspección periódica es variable en función del tipo de vehículo y de su antigüedad, teniendo en cuenta la fecha de la primera matriculación. Si el vehículo ya ha realizado una inspección técnica periódica, la fecha límite para la nueva inspección se indica en el reverso de la tarjeta de inspección técnica y del distintivo colocado en el parabrisas del vehículo.
Aparcar el vehículo, debe dirigirse a la oficina de servicio público de documentación del vehículo (permiso de circulación, Tarjeta de Inspección Técnica y último recibo del seguro del vehículo). Indicar al personal de la inspección que la realice.

En caso de cambio de destino del vehículo, según la normativa vigente, R.D. 2042/1994, se realizará una inspección, se anotará en la tarjeta I.T.V. el nuevo destino y la nueva fecha de inspección correspondiente a la nueva periodicidad por parte del órgano competente de la Comunidad Autónoma donde se haya realizado la inspección.
Si el cambio de destino del vehículo se produce antes del vencimiento del primer periodo de inspección, y si este cambio no implica ninguna modificación técnica, sólo se realizará la correspondiente anotación en la tarjeta I.T.V., siendo el plazo de la primera inspección el que correspondería a la situación más grave de los dos destinos.
