Mercedes-AMG repeats as the winner of this category. Its 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine remains a benchmark.  We will find this powerful 360 hp engine in the compact models of Mercedes-AMG, namely A 45 AMG, CLA 45 AMG and GLA 45 AMG. Another four-cylinder sneaks in, Audi’s 2.0 TFSI, which is used for performance models such as the Audi S3, the Audi TT or the SEAT Leon Cupra.

Past the 3-liter threshold is Ferrari territory. The 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 of the Ferrari GTB also wins in this category. It is followed by the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 from Mercedes-AMG, used by the AMG GT or the C63 AMG. Then there is the now classic four-liter boxer engine used in the Porsche 911 GT3 RS sports car.

For engines with more than 4 liters, a Ferrari appears again on the list, in this case the exclusive F12tdf with its powerful 6.3-liter V12 engine. Behind it is the 5.2-liter V10 made by Audi that is present in the Audi R8 and also in the Lamborghini Huracán.

Can you explain how a car engine works? How many types of engines are there? These are simple questions whose answer is somewhat more complex than it seems. However, these illustrations will leave you in no doubt.

The engine is the heart of every automobile. It is a machine built to convert the heat produced by the explosion (in the case of gasoline engines) or combustion (in the case of diesel engines) of the fuel into a movement with enough force to turn the wheels and allow the vehicle to move.

In the case of the conventional gasoline engine, the chain of reactions that achieves that goal is set in motion by a spark, which ignites a mixture of fuel vapor and compressed air within a momentarily sealed cylinder, causing the mixture to burn rapidly. As the mixture burns, it expands and provides power.

To support this heavy workload the engine must be sufficiently robust. It consists of two basic parts: the engine block and the cylinder head. The engine block is the bottom and heaviest part, a housing for the main movement of the engine parts.

Atmospheric engine

The engine with which Ferrari once again took the title was the 3.902-liter twin-turbo V8 F154CB used in the 488 GTB with which it scored 251 points. Second place went to Porsche with its 3.0-liter opposed six-cylinder used in the 911 Carrera with 216 points. Third place went to BMW with the hybrid system of the i8 with 151 points.

In the Electric Engine category we found almost the same results as in Green Engine, only that the BMW i8 is replaced by the i3, Tesla took first place and the Chevrolet Bolt third.

The winner of the Over 4.0-liter category was Ferrari with its naturally aspirated V12 used in the new 812 Superfast, followed by the 5.2-liter V10 of the Audi R8 and the Lamborghini Huracán. Third place also belongs to Lamborghini, but for the V12 engine of the Aventador.

In the 3.0 to 4.0 liter category the winner is also Ferrari with the V8 that gave it the overall title. Second place goes to the 4.0-liter V8 of Mercedes-AMG and third place went to the 4.0-liter B6 of the Porsche 911 GT3.

3-cylinder engines are reliable

The 2019 International Engine of the Year Powertrain Awards, awarded by a jury made up of 70 specialized journalists from various motoring media around the world, already have winners.

The runner-up in the category of engines under 150 hp went to BMW, with its 1.5 three-cylinder engine, a powertrain that is present in the BMW 1 Series, 2 Series, 2 Series Active Tourer and X1 ranges and in the Mini One, Cooper, Clubman One, Clubman Cooper, Countryman One and Countryman Cooper.
